Poe Springs - Sunday in my City

On Friday, we went to Poe Springs.

We are so blessed to live near many beautiful natural springs.

The temperature of the water is 72 degrees year round.  It's COLD.  When it's overcast, I can't swim, because I can't warm up in the sun and I am miserable.

It's been overcast a lot this summer, but fortunately we got some sunny time on Friday and I was able to swim.  Also, Elayna and I swam down to the river, which feels like a warm bath.  The temperature difference is amazing; as soon as you reach the river the water is drastically warmer than the springs.

This was taken from a floating dock on the river.
The river is very brown due to an abundance of cypress trees.

Elayna said I take a picture of this hollowed tree
every time we go.  She's probably right.

It's a long walk to the springs from the parking area,
which is a deterrent for some people.
Which is great for me.  I don't mind the walk,
it's worth it, and that's less of a crowd at the springs.
Win/win!

Cypress trees and cypress knees.

More boardwalk.  Pretty.

SIMC ~ Florida Sunshine

This weekend has been pretty great.  In a very, "I am a simple girl and it just does not take much to make me incredibly happy" kinda way.

I seriously cannot express how grateful I was for a BEAUTIFUL, sunny Saturday.  I can't remember when we've had one last.  Here in Florida.  THE SUNSHINE STATE.

It is true that in order to see the rainbow, you have to withstand the rain.  I thoroughly enjoyed this sunny day and soaked up the sun as much as I could.  (I'm addicted to Vitamin D, I admit it.)

These beautiful wildflowers grow alongside our dirt road.
Finding Native American artifacts on your own property
is kinda awesome.  We have found partial arrowheads
and tools like this one, and tons of flint.

Today I found this piece of bone.

On Saturday, hubby and I went to the Flea Market and bought fresh produce.
Then we went to the lake that I grew up on.

This is a trail by the lake.
The greenery looked like a beautiful living carpet.

When we reached the water's edge,
I took a deep breath,
and it smelled like home.

Huge snail on the shoreline.
I wanted to bring it home.  Hubby said no.

Tim came over Thursday to take care of his chinchilla, Wiz.
I had to take a pic because he matched my sofa perfectly!
PS - I have no idea what he's doing in this pic.

So cute.
On Saturday, I got my hair cut.
I got 3 inches of split ends cut off.
I like.

I hope you're enjoying your weekend, too!

Sundays in my SWAMP

Unknown Mami

I was looking out my kitchen window this morning
and saw that one of the trees out back
had beautiful white flowers blooming on it.

The branches are very high, so I couldn't pick any blooms.
I couldn't figure out what kind of tree it was.
I could tell by the leaves that it wasn't a magnolia,
and the blooms were too big to be dogwoods.

So I asked hubby, who immediately said,
"It's a bay tree.  They grow in Florida swamps."

And that definitely describes our home -
a Florida swamp.

I knew he would know what kind of tree it was.
His knowledge of the outdoors is practically encyclopedic.
Amazing.

Can you find the flowers?  There are three.
I hope you aren't tired of seeing pictures of my caladium plants yet.
Because I really love them, and they're doing so well.
I have already been able to transplant some to other areas.

It's a good thing they thrive in the swamp.

It's so tropical and bright and pretty!

Yes, I know, I need to weed.

Neat plant life.

I even love weeds,
especially when they're purple.

Wanna ride?

In case you couldn't find them,
here's your cheat sheet.
On Another Note:
I have created a Zazzle store to raise money for Dusty,
Shelbie's boyfriend who has t-cell lymphoma.
If you would like to order something, the link is below!
ALL proceeds will go to Dusty's family.

Like Peas & Carrots

In June, 700 cats were seized from the largest hoarding case The Humane Society has ever seen in the United States.
This happened just a few miles from my home.

According to the article, "People who needed to give up their cat and who visited Haven Acres likely got to see only the part of the facility that showed it in its best light, Animal Services Director David Flagler said.

"They thought they were taking their cats to a country club environment, and even some of our own staff thought the conditions were much better than what was found," Flagler said."

Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while will understand that I followed this case closely. We are animal lovers and rescue advocates, and have done a lot of volunteering and fostering throughout the past few years. I also have a personal connection to the situation; I went to school with the daughter of the man who was arrested in this case. I've talked to her on Facebook about the situation. She cut all ties with her 'father' years ago, and was so happy and relieved to hear that the couple was finally arrested.

So I'm sure it will not come as any surprise to any of you that, when they announced that the cats were now available for adoption, I felt compelled to get involved.

This weekend, The Humane Society held a huge event called the Florida Feline 550. Out of the 700 cats seized from the hoard, 550 were available for adoption this weekend. Many of the cats had to be euthanized, some are still undergoing medical treatment, and some are being held to be used as evidence in the criminal case.
The rest, five hundred and fifty cats, were at our local Humane Society, looking for homes.
And naturally, I knew one of them had to be mine.

It wasn't hard to find a cat to adopt; what was hard was to narrow it down to only one. But we already have four cats; one was my limit.

{she loves MY pillow.}

And once again, those of you who know me will not be surprised that the cat I chose has only one eye, and one kidney. I gravitate towards the animals that most people wouldn't want. There were many beautiful cats there. It's astounding how wonderful they look now, considering the condition they were in when the HSUS found them. One tiny cat that I really liked has gained three pounds since she was brought in. She only weighs about 5 pounds now. Three months of good care makes a world of difference.

I'm a huge fan of Forrest Gump, so when I saw a cage containing two cats with the labels "Forrest" and "Jennie", I naturally looked in. And that's when I saw my sweet one-eyed girl.

After being reassured by the vet that her kidney issues wouldn't require expensive medical care that we just can't afford, I knew Jennie was our girl. (I'm not sure if we'll keep the name or change it.)

She was born with two kidneys, but while at the "cat haven", she became pregnant and got an infection, involving her uterus. When the UF Vet School opened her up, they found severe infection and a mummified kitten. There were adhesions attaching it to her kidney, which is why it had to be removed as well as the reproductive organs. But she will be able to live just fine with one kidney. She was born with two eyes as well, but one ruptured due to untreated infection.

To me, she's beautiful, just the way she is.

She's settling in well. She explores when she feels like it, and hides when she feels like it, but mostly hangs out on my bed, on my pillow, looking out the window.

I hope she understands that she is safe now. She'll never be stuck in a cage again with minimal food and water. She'll always have a home, and food, and love.

Weekend Wrap Up

I already told y'all about the first part of our weekend here and here.

On Saturday night, I worked, and when I got home Sunday morning we went off in search of some fun in the sun. The teenagers didn't want to come along, so it was just me, John, and Elayna.

Florida State Parks were having a free admission day, so first we went to O'Leno State Park, but their swimming area was closed due to low water levels, and they also were not renting canoes. So we walked around there first, took some pictures, and then left to find a spot to swim.

O'Leno State Park

the suspension bridge was a leeeetle scary!

mushrooms growing inside of the tree

We ended up at Poe Springs park, which is not a state park but a very nice springs.

I love weekends like this.
It was simple but fun,
and I know the kids made some good, lasting memories.
That's what it's all about!

FYI for Florida residents/visitors: there are two more "no-fee" days at Florida State Parks this year, check it out at FloridaStateParks.org!

So Much to Say, So Many Frags

~*Friday Fragments*~

~* In case you didn't notice, I decorated my blog for the holidays. My header is all festive, my footer is a holiday message, AND....it's snowing! On my blog, that is. It's cold enough to snow here at home, too. Ugh! I thought I lived in Florida?!

~* I started decorating the house, too. I'm all done inside except for the tree, which we'll get this weekend (we always get a live one). We'll decorate outside this weekend too. This house is the biggest we've lived in, and I've decided we need more Christmas deco! I will be doing some after-Christmas stocking up for sure.

~* I almost let my kids stay up late watching TV last night - on a school night! - because I thought it was Friday. They weren't about to say anything, but I saw them exchange a weird look and then it hit me - d'uh! It's Thursday!

~* There's a great giveaway going on at I'm Living Proof that God Has a Sense of Humor. It's for a Reverse-a-Purse, and I want it! Check it out.

~* Speaking of giveaways, a while back I won a credit to have a custom piece made at Stamped Under the Moon. I just got my necklace in the mail, and I LOVE it! It is stamped with my kids' initials, which spell the word EAST in order of youngest to oldest (Elayna, Andrew, Shelbie, Timothy). I LOVE my necklace!

~* I got an award this week on my food blog, Southern Loving. I was so shocked! I am on a list with some real, GOOD food bloggers! I'm not sure how that happened, but I'll take it!

~* I am SO happy to be back to blogging regularly. I hated feeling so out of touch, and I NEED my outlet of blogging! I've been getting caught up on some of your blogs, and I've even had time to get on Twitter a little bit. I actually blogged every day this week, which is unusual for me, but I just had so much to say and had been out of the loop for so long! Thanks to all of you who stuck with me through my hit & miss blogging & visiting.

~* If you've never seen this site, check it out when no kids are around, and you're not eating so you don't (a) choke or (b) spit food all over your screen. Seriously, I have laughed myself SICK the past few nights reading this site! Hilarious! Damn You Auto Correct

~* If you are one of the people who gets upset when you see someone shorten "Christmas" to "X-mas", read this information that my friend put on Facebook. It's actually not an offensive thing!

"X-mas" originated due to the fact that "X" is the greek letter for "chi." What does "chi" mean?

You guessed it, "Christ."

So when you see "X-mas," the word Christ is still in it and the reason for season has not been forgotten!

~* Last but not least....I'm going to start ending my Friday Fragment posts with a favorite song of the week. Listen if you're interested. This one reminds me of myself & the hubby!
