Globetrotting

Last week the Harlem Globetrotters came to our town, and I won four tickets from our local TV station! So me, John, and the youngest two kids went to the show. Tim had to work, and Shelbie wasn't interested, so it worked out well.

The kids didn't know what to expect, but it started out with a bang and they had a blast. They did tricks, and were funny & totally entertaining. The kids totally got into it, screaming and dancing.

{I have no idea why Andrew's eyes are OPEN WIDE in this pic. He's a goofball!}

Click these pics to make them bigger & see the action.
In this first one, they are bowling using the mascot, Globie, as a bowling ball.

Strike!

Then when the show was over, the performers signed autographs and posed for pictures. So we got a ball and had it signed by almost all of the Globetrotters.

In the picture below, the Globetrotter is asking Elayna what happened to her thumb.
They are so fan-friendly and really good with the kids.

It was definitely a memorable experience & I'm so glad we got to go!

A Decade of Changes

As this decade draws to a close, I can't help but look back and reflect on what these last ten years have held for me.

I would have to say that the past 10 years were the most eventful of my life. They were full of changes - huge changes.

When the new millennium began, I had absolutely no idea what was in store for me in the coming ten years. If you had told me on December 31st, 1999, what the next ten years would bring, I wouldn't have believed it.

It all started with a new baby. In the Spring of 2000, I discovered that I was expecting a surprise baby. I had a seven year old and a four year old, and no immediate plans of having any more. But God had other plans....and he gave us Elayna, in January of 2001.

I stayed at home with the kids and loved it, although my marriage was stumbling along as it almost always had. And on New Years Eve of 2002, that blew up in a major way. 2003 began with my (now ex-) husband and I separating. Needless to say, it was a hard year. My baby turned two with a lot of chaos in the background. I didn't realize it at the time, but the hardest thing was just my life turning absolutely upside-down. I had to go back to work in the midst of a divorce and leave my baby for the first time. Meanwhile my older kids were confused and hurting. We also had to move and they had to change schools. It was an incredibly difficult time.

But 2004 was so much better. The divorce become final in February. The kids and I were adjusting well and I was becoming truly happy for the first time in a long, long time. I was discovering who I really was as just ME, not somebody's wife or just somebody's mom. I was finding myself. I was also working full time and going to school. It was tough, but it was good.
And then, on my birthday in 2004, I met a man who would change my life yet again.
I was burnt out on dating but something told me to give this a chance....and I am so glad that I did.

John and Andrew came into my life and brought me so much joy and love. They were literally an answer to prayers. Andrew was four years old, and my kids were 3, 8, and 11.

In April of 2005, we officially blended our family. John and I got married in a pretty little backyard ceremony with our children as the only attendants. It was lovely and sweet and the best day of my life. John loves me for who I am, and is so good to me. He has healed me.

In 2006,we almost moved to St. Augustine, and I sometimes wish we had. But instead, I got a job in the medical field, fulfilling a goal of mine, which is what I had been in school for. This was a good thing, for the most part. Also in 2006, my oldest son moved in with his Dad. Which has been another mixed thing; good and bad and sometimes I wish it hadn't happened. He is now with me about 1/3 of the month and his dad 2/3, and it works out quite well.

In 2007, we achieved another one of my major goals, which was to move back to the town I had lived in before my divorce. I loved the schools here and the small-town atmosphere. It was very important for my kids to get back here.
Unfortunately, in 2007 Andrew briefly went to live with his biological mother. That was disastrous and something we wished never happened. I also started this blog in November of 2007.

Shortly after that, I had yet another huge life change. In February of 2008, I had gastric bypass surgery. I lost almost 120 pounds. It was the best decision I have ever made for myself. Emotionally and physically, I have never felt better. It's been almost three years, and I've had no complications. I just bought my first pair of skinny jeans! I'll be doing a big update post about that a little later.

Later in 2008, Andrew came back to live with us, thankfully. He's been in therapy since then because of that brief time with his mother, and hasn't seen her since.

In 2009, I reconnected with a good friend of mine who I've known since high school. She was going through a rough time and she and her daughter moved in with us for a little while. It was so good to renew our friendship and help her out in a tough time. I joked that I had a wife; she cooked and cleaned and watched the kids some nights when John and I were both at work.
She is now married and doing well and we are still in touch.

We also found our wonderful church and became members. Finally, a place where we felt that we fit in and people were there not just for a fashion show, or a gossip fest, or to look good. We are like family there, and we love it.

So that brings us to 2010. We moved in to this home that we love. Elayna turned 9, then Tim turned 17, then Andrew turned 11, and finally Shelbie turned 15. My son started dating his girlfriend, who we love. My husband and daughters were baptized by our preacher and friend. I left my hospital job after many changes, and plan to do something else within the medical field, with less hours and less stress. I have juggled softball, soccer and volleyball and a teenager's social life. My oldest son started his senior year of high school and my oldest daughter started her freshman year of high school (and that threw this mama for a loop!). Andrew's bio-mom just came out of hiding to demand her parental visitation rights, and we're grappling with that. Life is not perfect, but we have wonderful friends, family, and faith, and we will be okay.

It has been a truly amazing decade. That word, "amazing", is so overused, but it fits this past ten years so well. I think I've experienced every emotion possible, and then some. But it's ending on a wonderful note. I am content, happy, and at peace. My heart is so full of love.

I can only imagine what the next 10 years will bring, as my older kids leave the nest, start college, maybe even families (hopefully at the END of the decade!!). But I know that my best friend, my husband, will be at my side, holding my hand, walking through it all with me.

If you made it this far, thank you for going on this journey down memory lane with me. I wish you a wonderful decade to come!

Precious Memories

My most favorite ornaments are the ones that the kids have made throughout the years.
I'm notoriously disorganized and we've moved a lot,
so it's amazing that I've managed to hold on to these ornaments for so long.

Tim is my oldest son, he is 17 and a senior in high school.
He made this ornament in preschool.

My brother's wife had this ornament made for me.
She used to babysit Tim while I worked.
He was about 18 months old in this picture.

Shelbie is almost 15 now. She made this in preschool.
It's made with colored corn kernels.

As you can see, she made this one in Kindergarten.

Andrew made this ornament in Kindergarten, too.
He is 11 now and in 4th grade.

He made this ornament in the 2nd grade.

Elayna made this one for me, but it isn't dated.
It's definitely a few years old, and Elayna is now 9 years old,
and in 4th grade.

Elayna made this one last year in church.

*Random Bonus picture of me and Elayna, goofing around.*

Weekend WrapUp

We planned a great weekend for the kids, and I have to say it went off almost without a hitch!

Saturday we took The Littles to our local Medieval Faire. They had a blast, the weather was nice, and the food was delicious.

Elayna got the Princess Eye

Andrew is not so big on face painting, so he chose to have his arm painted instead.

Elayna petting a "Baby Dragon" (ordinary lizard, lol)

Andrew & Elayna playing with Crystal Sticks

They enjoyed this maze, and I thought the sign was cute!

...and speaking of cute signs, I really loved this one!

this beautiful little bird is a European Kestrel.

After the Medieval Faire, we picked Shelbie up from a church trip and dropped Elayna off at a sleepover party. Then we went to the mall. Shelbie wanted to look for a dress for her 8th Grade Social, which is over two months away, but I said sure, let's just look. We ended up finding a gorgeous dress on a GREAT sale, so we got it! Happy teenager, happy mama.
The day was capped off with a late-night Krispy Kreme run, and really, does it get any better than that??

Sunday started with picking Elayna up from her sleepover party, then we went to church. Afterwards we took the kids for their surprise: lunch at a Japanese Steak House! I mentioned over at Southern Loving, my food blog, that I am trying to introduce more foods from other cultures to the kids, and I'd been wanting to take them to a Japanese Steak House for a while. They LOVED it, and we all had a really great time. I posted more pictures of this adventure at Southern Loving, but here are a couple:

And the last fun activity was on Sunday night. We had a Superbowl Family Fun Night at church. Everyone brought food, there was child care for the kids, and we all just hung out and had a good time. They had a drawing to give away two football jerseys, and John won one of them! We left at halftime to get the kids to bed, but we watched the rest at home and were happy to see the Saints win.

Hope y'all had a wonderful weekend too!

The Sun & the sand & a Diet Pepsi in my hand

We had the best weekend we've had in a long time. Partly because we had a ton of fun, partly because our stress level has finally lessened and that feels really good.

Saturday: I was utterly lazy most of the day. Like, lounging on the sofa, dozing off and on...that kind of lazy. Then around 3pm, we went to my parents' house. We had family visiting from Panama City FL that we don't get to see nearly enough. We visited with them and watched the Gator Game (which we won! WOOHOO!). Good times.
Also...Shelbie got highlights in her hair this weekend for the first time.

Sunday: We haven't been attending church regularly lately because we hadn't found the right 'fit' for us. But we visited a new church on Sunday, and I think we have found our fit. A very small, low-key church with an awesome pastor and congregation.
After church, we set about organizing the house. We are now completely done moving in, and John even got all of my stuff hung on the walls! It feels so good to have everything done.

Monday: was the best day of all. We celebrated Labor Day at St. Augustine beach! The little kids (Andrew & Elayna) didn't know we planned to go. We wanted to surprise all of them, but the bigger kids caught on. The little kids didn't know until we drove into St. Augustine! We all had a blast. Salt water & air is so good for the soul. First we went to Anastasia State Park. We played in the waves for hours, collected shells, ran around, and had a blast. (Andrew said "Living with y'all is better than living at Disney World!" of course I'm sure he was thinking otherwise when I was yelling at him to go to bed later last night. heh) Then we went a few miles down to Vilano Beach and let the kids play in the Splash Park and climb on the rocks in the water. When we left, we took the littles to a big carousel in a park and let them ride the horses, another surprise.
Even though we're on a TIGHT budget after school starting, moving, and John being out of work for over a month, we scraped pennies and made it work. I made 15 sandwiches Sunday night, and packed snacks & drinks. Then we ate dinner when we got back home. I'm so glad we did it. And there's nothing like a hot shower after a day at the beach, cleaning sand out of places that sand has no business going. Ahhhh.

Hope y'all had a great long weekend!

Girly-Girl Time

This past Sunday, my older two kids left for their church trip to Virginia. Andrew was with his grandmother. So, that left just Elayna, my youngest girl, for a few hours until she went to her dad's house that evening. I'd thought about it earlier in the week and decided that she and I would spend some Girly-girl time together.

I so rarely get one-on-one time with any of my kids. It was only a few hours, so we couldn't do anything spectacular, but we had fun.

First, she took a bath and washed her hair. Then while it was wet, I braided it into two braids per her request. When we do that, the next day when we take the braids out, her hair is crazy-wavy and cute.

Then, of course, her nails had to be done. With pink polish and glitter hearts painted on top. Toenails too.

When that was done, I made her face up with a little of my make-up. She was loving it.

We had planned to walk to the ice cream shop during this time, but we forgot that they were closed on Sundays. So we improvised...we walked to CVS and got frozen treats from there. She also got a pair of Hannah Montana sunglasses.

It was so simple, but so nice. She loved
being the center of attention for a little while!

The end result, from my camera phone....

TGIFriday Fragments

Here are the fragments running through my head this Friday.

~*~ My hubby was off yesterday, is off today, and is off all weekend. This makes me very, very happy!

~*~ My kids will be with me for the 4th of July. This also makes me very, very happy!
There is a huge celebration just around the corner from our house at our Rec Center. They are expecting around 20,000 attendees! It should be a ton of fun.

~*~ My oldest son, Tim, ya know that kid who got his driver's license two weeks ago?? Guess what he got yesterday? His first speeding ticket. I.was.livid.

~*~ Remember how he started his first job last week? His first two paychecks will go to pay the speeding ticket. :sigh:

~*~ Right now my kids are with their Dad, and we only have Andrew at home. We don't get a lot of one-on-one time with the kids, since we have four of them. But later today, we're taking Andrew to a movie (Night At The Museum 2), to get a his hair cut in a special style he's been wanting (pics to come!), and then we'll get pizza (his fave meal) and probably watch more movies at home. It's going to be fun!

~*~ If you missed my post yesterday, please go read it. This is not to pimp a post, it's really an important subject.

~*~ Remember my friend, who I hadn't seen in a few years until I ran into her a few weeks ago? She is going through some really rough times right now, and we have been helping her as much as possible. Watching her daughter and just being there for her. (we being myself and my husband because he is so supportive, concerned, and helpful. LOVE that guy.) Anyway, it just got me thinking how God puts us into each other's paths for a reason. I have no doubt that I saw her that day so that I could help her right now. She has held me and cried and thanked me for helping her. And I am just thankful that we are able to help her, and that I was put in her path that day.

~*~ Last weekend, John and I went out to lunch, and there was a Jeep Cherokee parked next to us. This thing had some of the best bumper stickers on it that I've ever seen. I wanted to take pictures of them, but I didn't want the owner to see me and freak out. Anyway, the best one, which really stuck in my head, said: Spiritual People Inspire Me. Religious People Scare Me. I love it.

~*~ With Independence Day almost here, my thoughts are with the men and women in the military who are fighting for our freedom. In particular, my cousin Stephen, who joined the Army last year, and my childrens' cousin, Josh, who just joined the Marines. Both of these guys are very young and I am so proud of them, and I worry about them, and love them so much.

Whew! I am all defragged now, I feel much better. Go visit Mrs. 4444 at Half Past Kissin' Time for more Friday Fragments!

~*~ Have a wonderful Independence Day Weekend!~*~
