Having already moved eleventy billion times, John and I kind of have a system.
He packs everything he can get his hands on. I try to find stuff. Everything I look for is not in its place. I lose my mind.
Seriously. He starts packing early. For example, he's already got a TON of stuff packed and we're not moving until the end of the month.
Last time we moved, I was trying to cook one night and literally could not find ONE SINGLE THING to stir with. I had a complete meltdown.
So this time I've laid down some rules.
The kitchen MUST be packed LAST. (I have to have my cooking stuff, and it has to be in its proper place. Otherwise, things get UGLY.)
He can't throw anything away without my permission. (I'm still missing stuff from the last move!)
He can't pack anything breakable without wrapping it up. (while looking for a flippin' spoon last time, I broke a decorative plate and totally blamed him because HELLO WHO PACKS THE ENTIRE KITCHEN 2 WEEKS BEFORE YOU MOVE??? And it was a thrift store find, therefore irreplaceable!)
Don't pack my toothbrush. (Do I really need to elaborate?)
Do not pack anything that breathes. (I think this man would pack me, the kids, and the dogs in boxes if I'd let him. He may or may not have packed a cat in a previous move......)
I guess it's a pretty good system. He does all of the packing. I do all of the unpacking & decorating. Except for hanging stuff on the walls; he does that, and I supervise. "Nope, sorry honey, it's still a little crooked!" That, my friends, is how I get my revenge!

GREAT list of packing rules...for real this is so me. but i love packing, and unpacking. i know i am a total control freak like that. Big Daddy can just do all the heavy lifting.
Those sound like very wise rules!! My hubby gets like that too. He has moved so many times he just wants to get it done and over with. :)
I've also moved eleventy billion times...and I've learned that if it's packed, then it's gone, and I need to mourn its absence - but not get annoyed with the one who packed it.
But then again, I've never had a husband help pack.
When someone else helps you pack, opening each box is like Christmas morning - you never know what you're going to find.
Those are some great ideas! I always make sure that I take a set of sheets for each bed, as well as a blanket and pillows, with us when we move. When you're exhausted at the end of the day after packing and unpacking, that's the one thing I always wanted to be able to find so that we could all get a good night's sleep.
What is it with hubbies throwing away our stuff without permission? Same here. Ooooops, guess I'm guilty as charged... I definitely have thrown torn, tattered, ripped clothing that he continues to wear (ughhhh!). BUT... I need my things.. they are important to me! Ha ha ha. Good luck with the move and someone please let the cat out of the box:)
omg, I feel for you. I've moved 19 times and I actually do like it. I have a few more in me, I'm sure. But I like packing the kitchen up early. It's the hardest room to pack so I like getting it done. I'll go down to paper plates and frozen food rather than wait to have to pack that mess at the end!
Well, at least he does all the packing- that's a bonus!
But, yes, the kitchen stuff has to go last!

i'm sorry - i really feel fo you. I HATE moving.
I always start packing WAY ahead of time and we end up living out of boxes for a week or ten. Thank goodness we haven't moved in 10 years.
I have only moved twice as an adult so I have no experience in this department lol.
Oh no. How did I miss that post? I had to go back and read that post to update myself. I'm so sorry you have to move again. So stinky! I know you really enjoyed that house.
And moving is the worst! I hate moving. Boo. It is the packing I hate. The unpacking isn't too bad. But the packing. And the hauling. Ugh.
Hang in there!
This sounds like a good plan. I feel the same way about home repairs.
I've been in the same house for 15 years. I'd almost want to move just to get rid of some stuff. Almost...
I hate, hate, hate moving. You have a great system. I hope I don't move for a very, very long time (we just moved in in July 2010 though)...happy to be in one place for awhile. But it does force you to go through your stuff...is it worth the work to move it? :)
Don't pack my toothbrush! bawahahaha! No need to elaborate, this was priceless. I think your husband and I are long lost sibblings.
I hate moving. Really I hate packing. Every time we've moved, I do 80% of the packing but not without hearing "we have too much crap" about eleventy billion times. Annoying. Grrr...
Good luck with your move! You also should have a rule about your computer getting packed very very last and unpacked very very first. :)
I agree with your philosophy of moving, and I am very, very happy that you have a partner in this very big, stressful job! :)
You have already admitted that a cat was found in the trunk! LOL I've always packed most of the kitchen up and left only the bare essentials...but I don't have kids, so that probably makes a big difference.
I love to pack. It gives me a chance to go through everything and decide it's worth in my life. I really should move more often LOL
Enjoy the journey!!
this sounds like a great system. and i agree, dont pack the kitchen until right before you move. you never know what youre going to need.
Wow! Didn't you guys just move into this place a little while ago? Where are you moving to?
What a great list. If we ever had to move my husband would stand there looking at me like an idiot. He is great at the heavy lifting but other then that he doesn't have a clue. I've moved a gazillion times & he has only moved kinda. He moved to college and then right back to this house... he bought it from his parents when he was done with college so technically he has never moved. Loser right!
I think it's awesome that he helps you pack. I think my husband only packed the garage stuff when we moved.
