I think my house is haunted.

So, we've been blowing things off ever since we moved in here. Little noises, doors being open when we swear we've shut them, TV or lights turned on when we're almost certain we've turned them off, things being moved. We have kids & pets, so we just brushed these things off.
But lately.....it's been harder to do that.
Last week, John saw an old man standing on our front porch. He did a double take, and the man was gone.
A couple of nights later, I saw "something" in the hallway. I have thought I saw things in that same hallway before, but it was always out of the corner of my eye, and when I looked straight at it, it would be gone. But this time, when I turned my head, it was still there. A white, transparent, shapeless form.
And then tonight.
I had the vacuum cleaner out earlier in the night, cleaning off the fireplace & mantel to decorate it for Christmas. I left it plugged in, which I do very frequently because I use it so often.
And about five hours later, I was sweeping the floor and noticed that the dog bed needed vacuuming. I commented aloud to the dog who was sleeping on the bed, "You're gonna have to move in a minute because I'm going to vacuum that thing." (yes, I talk to my animals.)
About three minutes later, the vacuum turned on. All.by.itself. No humans or animals were anywhere near it. It has a push-button switch, you push down on it with your foot to turn it on. You have to push it pretty hard to get it to come on and stay on. Which it did. For several minutes, because John and I kind of freaked out and neither of us wanted to walk over there and turn it off.
Finally, I turned it off, and nothing has happened since then.
It doesn't scare me at all when these incidents happen. It freaks me out, because it's just weird, but I never feel afraid.
Mostly I feel intrigued.
What's going on here?
What's going to happen next?

ohmygod... cyndy i would have to move but thats cuz it would really scare me... you are brave, sistah... BRAVE. in theory, i suppose i would know it wasnt gonna hurt me, but i have watched too many scary movies that scare me, and its not the monster ones like freddy crugger etc, it's the spychological ones that do me in like the excorcist, paranormal, etc...

ohhh honey please be careful!

do your pets ever act weird? they are able to sense things like that..

Certainly sounds spooky. Although, a ghost that does the vacuuming could turn out pretty handy! Stopping by from SITS :-)

Have you tried talking to 'it'? We had to get a priest in to our old house to do a blessing in an attempt to help Youngling to sleep at night. It was as though someone kept waking him up to play so we had to ask them kindly to only 'drop-by' between 9am-5pm! Good luck keep us posted with how you get on. xx

Kate is right...you have to talk to him. He seems friendly so you won't have any problems. Tell him that his home is being well taken care of, tell him that he doesn't have to stay anymore, tell him to go toward the light and be with his loved ones, blah, blah, blah. Sounds silly, but it works. I don't think you need to go as far as to have the home "blessed" (or whatever your faith dictates) because the haunting isn't malicious. A good, stern (be kinda forceful) talking too should do the trick. Keep us updated!!! I'm soooooo intrigued by this kind of thing!!!!!

I'd try talking to it, too.

I would love to have a ghost that did my vacuuming. And the laundry!

Same kind of things used to happen in the house where I grew up. They still do ocassionally but not as much since we kids have moved out. The faucets would turn on by themselves, doors would open and close, the stereo would turn on. I was never afraid either. :)

Coming from one who has lived in a haunted house... yes I believe in ghost.. you have to tell them to stop scaring you. Take your house back. Right now they're just trying to tell you they're there
** Okay I just re-read this and fuk if I don't sound like Sylvia Brown and that old bat with the bun that is always on the ghost shows... lol

Tell the ghost that if it's gonna turn the vacuum on, it better move it around to clean up!

My house acts up from time to time, but nothing like what you're going through. If you don't feel scared, it's probably a harmless ghost!

Okay, this is really weird, but after I left a comment on this post (and other people's blogs), I heard a weird noise coming from my garage. When I went to investigate, I realized that my husband's shop vacuum was running! It appears that the hose for it unlooped and fell on the on switch, turning it on. This switch doesn't turn on/off easily though! And the timing of it is REALLY weird! My house has been pretty quiet lately, but I wonder if things are going to pick up. Time will tell.

Leave it to you to get a ghost who cleans! Ask him if he has a brother who likes it up North. I could use the help and company. LOL

Seriously, you know I believe in all that and I believe you. At least he's nice!

WOW!!! I have a friend that has a ghost in her house. It does weird things like turning on the radio full blast at 2AM... without the radio being plugged in. YIKES! I don't know that I could handle it, but I have always heard that as long as things that happen are harmless the ghost is just there to be a part of the home. If anything at all happens that is harmful... get out!

I so believe in this. I am obsessed with stories like these and I am always watching Ghost Hunters, or Paranormal State, or Psychic Kids. I love this stuff. Not so much when it happens to me (which it has in the past-you can go read my Ghost Stories label on my sidebar if you want).

It doesn't sound like it is anything bad. Just a person who is probably hanging around their old house. Nothing to be scared of. But I can certainly understand being startled.

Anyway, if it bothers you just tell it to stop it. That it is your house and they are not allowed to scare you or your family members. You can tell it that it can stay if it behaves, or if you want it gone tell it that it HAS to leave because it is your house.
I may sound crazy, but it works.

Keep us posted!!!!!

I didn't read through all your comments before posting (I'm just trying to catch up on reading), but I say, call TAPS! steve and tango will track down some proof of your friendly old man and put it on the sci fi channel

I love TAPS

actually, every christmas my grandma stops in to say hi. she passed 12/21/1980. I have a set of stuffed animals that sit on the piano bench at christmas ... a bear and two reindeer. one reindeer once played music when you pressed it's hand ... now, it mostly doesn't ... but grandma touches it and it plays. and it always happens on a day when I am by myself, piddling around in that room, so everyone thinks I am insane.

but I know it's her ♥
