People in Glass Houses Shouldn't Throw Hippos

Photobucket

Good morning, boys and girls!
Today we're going to talk about hypocrites.
Hypocrites are not these critters:

They're far less cute.
Let's define hypocrite.

Photobucket

I think that pretty well sums it up.
I am sure that most of us, at some point in our lives, have done something that could be called hypocritical. We're only human.
But some people seem to make it a full-time job! And I have encountered several of those people lately. So I'm going to discuss hippo-crites today.
The thing I see and hear a lot of recently is people saying nasty things about people for doing certain things. Or, directly confronting someone, telling them they are wrong for doing something. All the while, knowing that they do the exact.same.thing.themselves.
Let's have an example.
Let's say I smoke. (for the record, I don't, it's an example.)
If I were to go around bitching at other people for smoking, that would make me a big old HIPPO-crite. (I like to put the emphasis on HIPPO. I'm weird like that.)
Or, let's say I drive badly and tailgate everyone. Then, I yell at other people for tailgating ME.
What would that make me, class? You're RIGHT! A HIPPOcrite.
There's another point I'd like to make. If you're going to chastise, call out, tell off, or talk trash about something someone does, make sure you:
a. have NEVER done this thing before.
b. do not CURRENTLY do this thing.
c. will NEVER do it at any time in the future.
Time for another example:
Don't make fun of someone for driving a crappy car. One day, you may find yourself in that position, and drive a crappy car yourself. And then......you'll be a HIPPOcrite. Things can turn around and bite you in the butt! So watch your butt, peeps. Chances are, your words will come back to haunt you "in the end".
Don't spread nasty rumors about someone who drinks too much, if you tip the bottle yourself on a regular basis!
Or, if you put someone down for being a circus performer...but unbeknownst to anyone, YOU were a circus performer years ago...you might just be a HIPPOcrite! It's just icky to judge someone at all, but to judge someone for doing something that you yourself have done? That's downright ugly. And karma will get you!
The old saying is true. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
These stone-throwers will soon be surrounded by shattered glass if they aren't careful.

I think people are hypocrites by nature. Seriously, I do. I catch myself sometimes, being hypocritical. (Hey, at least I'm aware of it right?) I try to keep it in check because it is really annoying, isn't it?

I think if people would just practice the ART OF KEEPING THEIR MOUTHS SHUT; more lives would be free of HIPPO-CRITES!

I call myself out on crap all the time....it's a great way to keep me in check. I hope no one was slinging anything your way...

Yikes, I guess you have come across a hippo recently?

I think we all have done it but for some it is much more noticable.

Take for example, my hubby. I love him but there are many times I tell him he is a hypocrite. I think I have called him a hippo in a heated fight too.

Who knows....you never know what is going to spew from my pie hole when I'm pissed.

Speaking as someone who is currently being incessantly BERATED by a HIPPOcrite,

THANK YOU.

Maybe your next post could be what to say to a HIPPOcrite without being one yourself.

Hubby and I have not responded the way we WANT to respond, because we are after all, only responsible for ourselves and no one else.

This post explains why I no longer speak to my neighbor.

I am totally a hypocrite. But at least I admit and accept it. LOL

Ugh. Don't know what inspired this post but I'm guessing it wasn't unicorns and fairies.

Let's just say that YES, I have some major hippos in my life and they are throwing some big old stones from their glass houses. It's one of these "you are SCUM if you do xyz, but if I do it, that's DIFFERENT and therefore it's ok" type of situations. And it is amusing in some ways, but it also makes me want to vomit on their shoes.

Oh and I know some of you said you are hippos too...and like I said I'm sure we've all been hippos at one time or another. But these people? They throw stones like it's their job!

Well, I've been the giver and the receiver on this one!

I think I'll try to be a giraffe -- keep my head above it all and chew my eucalyptus leaves..

Found you through Soliloquy....loved this post!

Thanks for addressing the huge pink HIPPO in the room. It's reminded me once again to be careful when I open my mouth, or I might just stick a huge HIPPO foot in it.

Looking forward to coming back and reading more.

Oh yes, this urks me to no end. I try very hard not to judge people so when someone turns out to be a 'hippo' you bet I want to tell them what for. Usually I'm good at seething to myself, but there are those moments I call them on the carpet...oops!
